Using balanced equations and the periodic table to make mass calculations for reactions.

What you'll learn
Using the periodic table, calculate molar masses of compounds.
Using a balanced equation, identify the mole ratios in a reaction.
Perform calculations and solve problems involving the stoichiometry of a reaction.
Identify a limiting reactant and calculate the percent yield for a reaction.
Requirements
You will need a periodic table and a calculator.
Description
In this course, you will learn to use the coefficients of balanced equations to make calculations regarding the reactants or products in a chemical reaction. I will introduce each topic below using an analogy related do sandwich cookies (like Oreos). If you can understand the material using an Oreo, you should be able to understand the material using elements and compounds! You will calculate the mass of reactants required and products produced in a chemical reaction using the molar masses of elements found on the periodic table.Just like in a recipe for baking a cake, chemical reactions don't always have the perfect proportion of ingredients. Because of this, you will also learn how to determine the limiting reactant given a reaction with unequal ingredient proportions. Once you determine the limiting reactant, you can determine how much of a given product is produced.Because sometimes not all reactants fully react, or products are lost to side-reactions, no reaction ever creates the exact amount of product it should. Due to this, you will learn to calculate the reaction yield for a given scenario.Throughout the course, there are several opportunities to practice your skills, along with quizzes for you to have experience seeing, using, and calculating information from real-life chemical reactions.
